Ahhh... to have full, luxurious hair. Truly, it would be a dream come true. And, while naturally thick hair seems to be more a factor of genetics, there are remedies to help the less fortunate in the hair department (like, ahem, me.) My hair is naturally frizzy, so any sort of humidity causes my hair to explode. My humidity-ridden locks tend to resemble a fluffy lion’s mane. Let’s just say that’s not exactly the look I’m trying to achieve.
To alleviate some of the issues associated with troubled hair, we have compiled a list of our favorite DIY Homemade Hair Treatments. Why DIY and why homemade? Most store products have chemicals, dyes, preservatives, etc. that can actually be harmful to hair health. So, we decided to focus on all-natural products you can make right in your own home.

HOMEMADE FRIZZY DRY HAIR TREATMENT
Let’s start with frizzy, dry hair, since that seems to be my problem. I use this recipe once a week and my hair is noticeably different!
Ingredients:
- 1 Avocado
- 1 Egg Yolk
- 3 Tbsp Plain Yogurt
- 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
Instructions:
Scoop half an avocado, mix with 1 egg yolk, 3 Tbsp plain yogurt and 2 Tbsp mayo. Once the products are equally mixed, gently massage into ends of hair and work your way up. Avoid getting the product too close/saturated in the scalp, instead stick more to the hair strands themselves.
HOMEMADE OILY GREASY HAIR TREATMENT
This treatment is for those of you with the opposite problem as mine, and deal with oily, greasy scalps. This one worked wonders on a coworkers problem areas. Give it a try and see for yourself!
Ingredients:
- 1 Tbsp Cornmeal or Corn Starch
Instructions:
Lightly sprinkle cornmeal or corn starch on to scalp, focusing on oily spots. Use your fingers to lightly massage into scalp. After 10 minutes, completely brush the material out of the hair. Treatment can be applied 3-4 times a week.
HOMEMADE ITCHY SCALP TREATMENT
Everyone gets an itchy scalp once in a while. However, itchy scalp on a daily basis? No bueno. Here’s an idea to solve this particular situation.
Ingredients:
- 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 2 Tbsp Water
Instructions:
Mix lemon juice, olive oil and water into a bowl. Part your hair in sections, using a basting brush spread the mixture throughout the scalp, moving through each section of hair as you go. Let sit for 20 minutes then wash hair normally.
HOMEMADE DULL LACKLUSTER HAIR TREATMENT
Does your hair fail to ‘shine like the top of the Chrysler building?’ Don’t worry, ours too. Try this recipe and then see how shiny those strands can get!
Ingredients:
- ½ Cup Sour Cream
- Shower Cap
Instructions:
This one is easy - simply massage the sour cream into your hair and put shower cap on. Let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed immediately by cool water. This treatment can be done once a week. The fat found in the sour cream helps nourish your hair follicles, making them healthier and thus more shiny.
HOMEMADE PRODUCT RESIDUE IN HAIR TREATMENT
There’s nothing worse than product build-up in your hair. YUCK! This treatment is good to do every month to cleanse your hair of product residue. Think of all the hair spray, gels, creams, etc. go into your hair each day. This is one you’ll definitely want to try.
Ingredients:
- 2 Tbsp Baking Soda
- 1 Tbsp Water
Instructions:
Combine baking soda with water. Mix until it forms a paste-like substance. Massage into freshly cleaned hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse and repeat normal hair cleaning process.
