Whether you have grand plans for a beach getaway or just a day trip to the pool, packing your bathing suits correctly can be trickier than you might think. Sewn-in padding, underwires, and snag-prone fabrics, are just a few reasons why swimsuits should be packed carefully to extend the longevity and the correct fit of a suit. Below, we’re sharing tips on how to pack bathing suits to keep them looking great season after season. Check it out!
Use the right packing tools
First up, packing cubes! These light weight, adjustable bags can create a lot of space in your luggage. And, more importantly for your swimwear, they can help compartmentalize your clothes. Use packing cubes to stack or neatly fold your swimsuits with other delicates. The cubes will prevent your swimsuits from getting squished from larger, heavier clothing items and potentially misshaping or damaging your delicate swimwear. The cubes also make it a breeze to find your bathing suits in your luggage, just grab the cube and all your swimwear is right there in one place!
Stack swim tops
You need to be extra careful when packing your swim tops. Why? Your swim tops typically have a sewn-in pad, an underwire, molded cups, or even thick padding. Keeping the pads and shape of your swimwear is key to extending its longevity. There’s nothing worse than a misshapen padded cup. If you’ve ever accidentally dried a padded bra—you know what we’re talking about! When you fold your bathing suits, be sure to carefully fold the cups into each other and then tuck in any loose straps. Doing this will stack your cups and help to maintain their form. Then, carefully place all of your swim tops on top of each other to help prevent them from getting smashed in your suitcase.
Use the hat trick
Another great way to protect your swimwear in your luggage is to use bigger items—like your hats—to protect it. Try carefully placing folded swim tops, bottoms, and one-pieces in the crown of your hat. This will save space in your luggage and keep both your hat crown and your swimwear intact. When packing your hat in your suitcase, create a little nook in your clothing so you can fit the crown in, and have your brim lay flat against the top portion of your suitcase once you zip it up. Voila! An easy, simple way to pack your swimwear safely!
Bring extra plastic bags
Last but not least, for any beach or pool vacation make sure to pack a few empty plastic bags. These are a must-have for swimwear and will come in handy for a myriad of things as you're packing up to head home. Store any worn swimwear in the plastic bags—this helps prevent any of your other clothes from getting wet or mixed with dried chlorine or salt water. And, always remember to rinse or hand wash your swimsuit after every wear. You can do this quickly by gently running water and kneading in mild detergent in the suit. Be careful not to twist or pull on the suit too hard. Do this for a few minutes and then once it’s clean, lay it on a flat surface to dry. And, if you’re in a hurry to make it home, and your suit is still wet, just drop it in a plastic bag and you’ll be good to go!
