Summer is officially underway! While we love long hot summer days, we know keeping kids entertained all summer can be a challenge. In today’s blog post, we’re highlighting five fun and educational activities you can do with your kids this summer.
Learn A New Language With Free Language Programs
Learning a new language is easier than ever before with free online language learning apps. And, the summer is a great time to learn a new skill! With more free time, your kids can spend a few minutes a day learning a new language. We love free programs like Duolingo and Babbel. Both of these platforms offer free guided language courses for conversational use and vocabulary building. While your kids are learning a new language, consider dusting off your foreign language skills as well!

Put On A Play For The Neighborhood
Encourage your kids to explore the arts this summer. One of my fondest memories of my childhood was putting on puppet shows and other plays for my family, friends, and neighbors. Introduce your kids to some of the best playwrights of all time, like William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, and Oscar Wilde, or introduce them to more modern day playwrights like Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote Hamilton. Have them reenact famous scenes from each play or let them take their own spin on it!

Be An Active Citizen - Get Chores And Volunteer Opportunities In
This summer, teach your children about what it means to be an active citizen in your community. Perhaps it’s finding a volunteer opportunity they are really passionate about or maybe it’s starting a trash and recycling clean-up program in your neighborhood. Or even doing a chore around the house that has needed to be done for a while, like painting the fence or creating a plan for your household to conserve energy resources. No matter what it is, taking the time to learn how to be an active citizen in your community will provide lifelong benefits -- along with some good old fashioned summer fun!

Start A Business
It’s never too early to learn the skills of entrepreneurship. Encourage your kids to think about starting a summer business. Maybe it’s doing the ‘rite of passage’ summer lemonade stand or perhaps it’s starting an online shop or offering lawn maintenance or babysitting services. It can be whatever your kids are interested in! The real goal here isn’t to create a profitable business, although that would be a nice perk, the real goal is to teach your kids valuable lessons about business, hard work, the value of a dollar, etc. And an early introduction into entrepreneurship will look great on future college applications!

Explore Nature And Get Outside
Lastly, the summer is the time for exploring the great outdoors! Encourage your kids to unplug from technology this summer and explore all the cool things there are to do outdoors. Maybe it’s hiking, going to the park, joining a kick-ball league. If your kids need a bit more guidance outdoors, consider contacting your local parks and recreation department to find out what summer activities are available in your community. One thing’s for sure, a summer spent outdoors playing and exploring, is a summer well spent!
