As much as it may seem like winter may never end, spring really is just around the corner! To get you ready for the change of seasons, and to beat any remaining winter colds, this week’s post is on the best way to use green foods as a detox.

Check Out The Best Greens For A Food Detox

Why Greens are so Great for Detox

Let’s start by understanding what we mean by the buzzword “detox”. When we say detox we quite literally mean the systems and organ functions within your body that allow you to get rid of bad or toxic substances in your body. Your liver is the primary detoxifier of the body, but your lungs, kidneys, intestines, and lymphatic system all help as well. By detoxing, you’re giving an extra boost to these organs and systems; essentially enabling your body to get rid of bad or harmful substances more effectively.

Eating green, leafy vegetables and foods is a great way to help your body detox, or get rid of low-grade cumulative toxicity, as it helps your digestive system flush itself out.

Now that we know why it’s important to detox and how greens enable our bodies to do this more efficiently, let’s dive into the types of greens that are most recommended for detoxing.

  • Barley Grass: Barley Grass is loaded with vitamins and minerals and helps increase oxygen in your bloodstream, helping your body get rid of impurities.
  • Broccoli: While Broccoli may be every kid’s worst nightmare, it’s loaded with nutritional value. It’s a great source of fiber; helping your body expel toxins.
  • Celery: You may have heard about the popular celery detox. There’s a reason why this is such a popular food lately; packed with vitamins C & K and minerals like folate and potassium, celery helps reduce gut inflammation and boost heart health.
  • Chlorella: This single-celled algae attaches to heavy metals like mercury and lead, and harmful pesticides, and helps expel them from your system.

Filled with Vitamins A, C, E, iron, magnesium, calcium, and iron, dandelions help good gut bacteria while helping expel bad bacteria. Kale: We love Kale! It’s loaded with antioxidants to help with your digestive system and reduce inflammation. Kale is great in smoothies or even as fried kale chips - delicious!
