Woman Smelling Her Armpit

It’s summer. It’s hot. And that means you’re likely to experience more sweat and body odor than at other times of the year. Lately, the daily habit of applying deodorant and antiperspirants has been examined. Is it really safe? First, let’s distinguish between the two. Deodorant neutralizes body odors by targeting the bacteria in your underarm that causes an unpleasant smell. Antiperspirants temporarily block your sweat glands prohibiting your body from sweating as it normally would.

In terms of safety, there is no concrete evidence that antiperspirants and store-bought deodorants are harmful. However the Food and Drug Administration does require a warning label on antiperspirants because aluminum can negatively affect the body. Those with kidney disease or without fully functioning kidneys must consult their doctor before using antiperspirants (American Association of Kidney Patients), and there is concern whether antiperspirants containing aluminum may potentially cause complications leading to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Again, this hasn’t been scientifically proven; however, I believe it’s always a good idea to use natural ingredients and save money by making your own deodorant at home! And since it’s so easy and contains just three necessary ingredients, it’s definitely worth a try!

How To Make Homemade Deodorant

Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • 6 Tbsp of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup of arrowroot or cornstarch
  • Essential oils (optional)

Ingredients for a Homemade Deodorant

Steps:

  1. Mix together baking soda and arrowroot/cornstarch in a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. Put coconut oil in a mason jar and place the jar inside your pan/pot on the stove (this will speed up the cleaning process). Heat coconut oil on stove top until barely melted (should be about only 3 - 4 minutes).
  3. Add baking soda and arrowroot/cornstarch mixture to the jar.
  4. Mix until blended well.
  5. Add essential oils.
  6. Refrigerate for a several minutes and/or allow the mixture to harden at room temperature before use.

That’s it!

Also, it shouldn’t stain your clothing like store-bought deodorant although we recommend waiting 5 minutes or so after applying to put on your shirt.
