What is a tankini swimsuit?

First up, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page: what is a tankini swimsuit? A tankini swimsuit is a two-piece swimsuit typically consisting of a tank top-style top paired with bikini bottoms, hence, the name: “tank-ini”. Makes sense, right?

The great part about a tankini is the versatility—the tankini combines the coverage of a one-piece swimsuit with the convenience of a bikini. Tankinis provide more coverage over the torso compared to a traditional bikini top, making it a great option for women who want a fuller coverage swimwear option.

Tankinis come in various designs, colors, and patterns, offering options for different body types and coverage preferences. The style is popular for those seeking a more modest swimsuit style while enjoying beach or pool activities. While originally bikini bottoms were paired with tankinis, today any swimwear bottom including traditional bikini bottoms, boy shorts, board shorts, and skirted bottoms, are paired and worn with a tankini top.

At HAPARI, we pride ourselves on being tankini experts. In fact, our swimwear brand was one of the first to focus on offering tankini style swimwear along with more modest and full coverage designs. In our current collection, we offer seven different styles of tankini swimsuits including: bandeau, high-neck, luxe, slimming, sport, twist, and v-neck.

Who invented the tankini?

The tankini is a genius invention in swimwear versatility and coverage. It filled a need for women by providing more options for swimwear; now, instead of only having the options of wearing a bikini or a one-piece, women have an in-between option: the tankini. So, who invented this revolutionary swimwear style?

The tankini swimsuit was invented by Anne Cole, an American fashion designer, in the 1990s. Cole recognized the need for a swimsuit style that provided more coverage than a bikini but was more fashionable and versatile than a traditional one-piece swimsuit. It quickly gained popularity and has since become a staple in many women's swimwear collections.

HAPARI took that basic tankini design to the next level. With the goal of creating a swimwear line with modest coverage swimwear options specifically for women and moms, HAPARI was founded in 2004. HAPARI was started with the idea of creating swimwear that was made for women’s bodies throughout their lifetime. So many brands were at the time, and still are, only creating swimwear for women’s bodies in their early 20’s. The available options were not good enough. As a mom of four kids herself, our founder, Tasha Curry, knew that women needed swimwear options designed for women throughout their adult life. This meant creating swimwear for women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.

Why choose a tankini?

Tankinis are like the superheroes of swimwear, suited to flatter every body type with their blend of form and function. With a tankini, you get the coverage, support, and comfort of a one piece with the easy tank-like functionality of a two-piece swimsuit. The great part is tankinis come in so many different styles—from v-neck to bandeau to halter—and so many different prints that they flatter all body types. That's the magic of tankinis!

Tankinis are the ultimate customizable option. They come in all sorts of cuts, colors, and patterns, so you can mix and match until you find the perfect combo. Big bust? Tankinis with built-in support have got you covered (literally). If you like showing off your shoulders, go for a halter-neck style. Or if you’re swimming or running in your swimsuit, you can opt for boy shorts with a tankini top for a more athletic look. With tankinis, you can mix and match to create the right look for your body shape and preferences.
