In today’s post, we’re sharing fun activities to celebrate the upcoming Labor Day weekend. Yes, we’re still in a pandemic and there are some restrictions across the country for what you can do, but there are still some fun activities you can do to celebrate the long weekend and make family memories!
Before we dive into the activity list, did you know Labor Day was started back in the beginning of the late 19th Century as the labor movement grew? As trade unions gained popularity, there was a push to set aside a day to celebrate and recognize the American labor movement and the work and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.
Now that you know the background of the holiday, check out the list of fun family-friendly Labor Day activities below.
5) Hit the Water
Labor Day is often thought of as the last hoorah of summer before school starts. With the current pandemic, things may look a little different this year depending on your family’s schooling preferences and options. However, Labor Day still marks a shift for your kids from long summer days spent playing all day to reality with homework and schoolwork. Celebrate with one last hoorah and party at the pool, beach, or lake! If you’re not by any of those, try setting up a sprinkler or slip n’ slide for the kids in the backyard or at a nearby park. Make sure to pack your favorite HAPARI suit and cover-up for the festivities!

4) Turn Your Outdoor Space into a Movie Theater
With restrictions around social distancing, many movie theaters are closed so it’s a perfect time to get creative on how to watch your favorite movie with family and friends. Instead of heading indoors to watch a movie, bring the movie outside! Set up a movie projector or bring your TV outdoors. Set up comfy viewing spots 6 feet apart and enjoy a night of safe socially-distant movie-watching together with family and friends!

3) Head to the Mountains for a Picnic
During this pandemic, the one thing we’ve been thankful to still be able to do safely is head outdoors. For a fun family-friendly Labor Day activity, pack a picnic or get some food to-go from your favorite local restaurant and head outside for a picnic. If you live by the mountains, we recommend heading up there to escape for some fresh air and a change of scenery. Challenge the whole family to go “screen free” and use the time together to enjoy nature as a family.

2) Try a New Recipe
Now is a great time to try out a new recipe as a family! Whether you’ve been wanting to bake that intricate chocolate cake from scratch or you want to try making your great grandma’s famous pot roast, this long weekend is the perfect time to try it! Get your kids involved and have them help with the whole process; from measuring out ingredients to stirring/mixing and ultimately cooking. Yes it can be a bit more frustrating and time intensive with kids, but think of the process as the family activity. You’ll be learning a new skill together, making memories, and creating a tasty treat to eat afterwards.

1) Attend an Outdoor Concert
Lastly, check your local listings for an outdoor concert over the long weekend. Whether it’s a professional concert or just a community one, listening to some live music outdoors sounds pretty great doesn’t it? Bring some comfy chairs, a blanket and some snacks and enjoy the atmosphere.
