Summer Reading Recommendations For 2015

Have you heard?! Harper Lee, the author of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the pulitzer-prize winning (and arguably one of the most well-known and studied) books in American literature, is releasing a new novel. Despite the novel being controversial due to the seemingly reversal in themes between the books, it’s a reminder about the importance of books and the power of reading. A book can alter the course of history!

This summer, we’re encouraging you (and your kids) to grab a new book and read! Your mind is a muscle, and just like any other muscle, it needs to be exercised, Plus, reading is fun! It allows endless, new beginnings, new worlds, and new adventures!

To help you exercise your brain and add some new adventures in your life, we’ve curated HAPARI’s Summer Reading Recommendations. HAPARI’s Summer Reading Recommendations

Kindergarten through 2nd Grade

“The Magic Treehouse”

This classic children’s series follows Jack and Annie through their seemingly ordinary life in Pennsylvania to a magical universe found in their backyard Treehouse.

3rd Grade - 4th Grade

“Ramona”

This series of books follows Ramona Quimby on her adventures navigating her little sister, schoolyard bullies, and new schools. The series is well-received and is included in top books for this age group. The fun part of the series is ‘watching’ Ramona grow up through the eight books.

5th Grade - 6th Grade

“Holes”

This book is (and always will be) one of my all-time favorite books. The book follows Stanley Yelnats, an overweight teenage boy who has been cursed by his "no-good-dirty-rotten pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather." After getting in trouble, Stanley is sent to a detention camp in the middle of nowhere and is forced to dig holes to make up for his crime. The book follows his journey through camp, making friends with another inmate named Zero, and finding out why they’re forced to dig holes.

7th Grade - 8th Grade

“The Maze Runner” One of the New York Times Bestselling books, The Maze Runner, creates a post-apocalyptic universe where a boy named Thomas finds himself lost and confused. The new world is filled with lost teens trying to navigate a dangerous maze to find their way out of the world.

High School & Adult Reading

“Go Set a Watchman” The new novel by Harper Lee, “Go Set a Watchman,” follows grown-up Scout, now living in New York City, on her venture back to the small Alabama town of Maycomb during the height of the civil rights movement.
