This Summer has been one of the hottest on record in North America. With scorching temps, it’s more important than ever to keep your skin protected during the hot summer months. As a swimwear brand, it’s important to us to make sure we promote ways to keep your skin protected and safe when you’re wearing your HAPARI swimsuit.

In today’s post, we’re sharing tips to protect your skin this summer. Check it out!

How does your skin change in hot temperatures?

Before we dive into tips to protect your skin, let’s learn about how the sun and hotter temperatures impact the skin. During warmer weather months, skin texture can change as you adapt to the increased temperatures. Heat increases water loss from the body, leading to dehydrated skin which can become irritated, red and dry.

Additionally, as temperatures increase, our bodies sweat more and release more oils. The higher temperatures also increase skin cell production as well. Combine dead skin cells with excess oil and sweat, and it’s a recipe for more breakouts.

The impact on your skin

While our bodies need a healthy amount of sunlight to thrive, too much sun can be dangerous to the skin. There are two primary types of sun rays, UVA and UVB. Too much exposure to UVB rays can lead to sunburn in outer layers of the skin. UVA rays can travel more deeply into the skin than UVB rays, ultimately damaging or killing skin cells. Along with more serious results like skin cancer, harmful sun rays can also reduce the skin’s elasticity and ability to heal properly, leading to premature aging.

Tips to protect your skin

3. Wear protective clothing like Rashguards and Hats

While you're out enjoying the beach or pool this summer, add protective clothing on top of your swimsuit when you can. We encourage you to wear a rashguard, coverup, and/or hat while in the sun. By covering your skin with these protective clothing pieces, you can reduce sun exposure and the risks to your skin.

Never used a rash guard before? A rash guard is designed to be an added layer of sun protection for your torso and arms. At HAPARI we offer both long sleeve rash guards and short sleeve rash guards. These are particularly effective because they stay put and keep you protected throughout the day; you can’t sweat it off or swim it off, or forget to reapply! Throw on a rashguard on top of your swimsuit and you’re ready to go.

We also offer various coverups and mesh hats for added protection. The fabrics we use are perfect for keeping you cool and covering your skin. Check out all the accessory options available here.

At HAPARI, we take safe sun practices seriously. We want you to enjoy spending time outdoors with your families while knowing you are protected. All of our swimwear is made from UPF 50+ fabric to prevent UVA and UVB exposure.

2. Drink plenty of water

This is a given but it’s one of the strongest defenses for our bodies against the rising summer temperatures - drink water regularly. According to USGS, the United States Geological Survey, the average adult human is made up of 60% water. According to their site, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%. It’s essential, especially in the summer, to drink significant amounts of water to replenish your body.

1. Apply and wear sunscreen regularly

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, wearing daily sunscreen with a minimum 15 SPF can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by about 40 percent, and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.

When you’re outside, you should reapply a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen from head to two every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
